BRS opposes Singareni power supply agreement with Rajasthan

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Legislative Party Deputy Leader and former minister T. Harish Rao on Wednesday urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to immediately cancel the Joint Venture (JV) agreement to supply power generated at the Singareni Thermal Power Plant (STTP) at Jaipur in Mancherial district to Rajasthan. He said the BRS would intensify its agitation on behalf of farmers if the agreement to supply power to Rajasthan was not cancelled immediately.

In an open letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Harish Rao said the 800 MW power generated at the plant should be utilised entirely to meet Telangana’s power requirements, particularly in view of the difficulties being faced by farmers due to power shortages.

He questioned the rationale behind supplying electricity to another State when Telangana was struggling to meet its own demand.

Mr. Harish Rao also questioned the proposed diversion of an investment of nearly ₹22,000 crore from Singareni towards the development of Rajasthan. He alleged that the Congress government had failed to ensure adequate power supply to farmers despite its promise of 24-hour electricity.

He alleged that the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant (YTPP) was being operated with inferior-grade coal, resulting in damage to its boilers. He also alleged that power generation at the 800 MW Kothagudem and 540 MW Bhadradri plants had been affected due to a shortage of coal.

The BRS leader further claimed that thermal power plants in the State did not have the required 45-day coal reserves and alleged that the government was neglecting the plants.

He also questioned the government’s decision not to enter into a power purchase agreement for 1,600 MW of electricity from NTPC without additional financial burden on Telangana. He demanded that the PPA be signed immediately in accordance with the commitments made at the time of State bifurcation.
