In a municipal election in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district, the BJP emerged as the single-largest group in the 25-member Mundwa Municipality with 10 councillors, but failed to win the chairperson’s post, with its official candidate receiving zero votes.

According to a report by India Today, BJP candidate Geeta Devi polled zero votes, while Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) candidate Alka Devi Kandoi, backed by the Congress, won with 13 votes. She defeated Independent candidate Ghanshyam Sadawat by a margin of just one vote.

Sadawat contested the election as an Independent after being denied a BJP ticket.

The result has drawn attention because the ward-wise numbers pointed to a different outcome. Of the 25 wards in Mundwa Municipality, the BJP won 10, the RLP seven, the Congress three and Independents five. Yet none of the BJP’s 10 councillors voted for the party’s official candidate for chairperson.

The Congress and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) joined hands in the chairperson election and backed RLP candidate Alka Devi Kandoi.

The Congress had three councillors and the RLP seven, giving the two parties a combined strength of 10. However, Kandoi secured 13 votes — three more than the combined tally of the two parties.

Her 13 votes were enough to defeat Independent candidate Ghanshyam Sadawat, popularly known as Vicky, who secured 12 votes. Kandoi thus won the chairperson election by a narrow margin of one vote.

Sadawat had earlier won the councillor election on a BJP ticket and had also been politically active as the personal adviser to Rajasthan BJP state vice-president Dr Jyoti Mirdha.

The BJP had nominated Geeta Devi for the chairperson's post, while Sadawat was denied the party's ticket. He subsequently entered the chairperson contest as an Independent.

Despite contesting without the BJP's backing, Sadawat secured 12 votes, finishing just one vote behind Kandoi.

Across 10,244 wards in 309 urban local bodies, BJP won 4,182 wards, followed by Congress with 3,619 and independents with 2,273. Among smaller parties, RLP won 63 wards, AAP 42, CPM 38, BSP 19 and Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) eight.
