What happens when women police officers pose as women travelling alone? In Bhilwara, Rajasthan, plainclothes policewomen waited at bus stops and other public places as part of a two-day operation targeting harassment earlier this year.Men approached them. Some offered rides. Others persisted after being refused. One allegedly offered alcohol and asked a plainclothes constable to go for a ride. The police were watching from a distance.By the end of the operation, 18 people had been apprehended. But what shocked the officer leading the operation, Neha Singh Rao, wasn’t the arrests or the minors. It was how ordinary many of the men appeared, including married men with children.
