The Bharatiya Janata Party has secured 3,688 wards in Rajasthan's municipal elections, establishing a clear lead over Congress's 3,135 wards, whilst independent candidates have claimed a significant 2,039 wards across the state.
The results, declared today following two-phase voting on 9 and 11 September, cover 309 urban local bodies including 10 municipal corporations, 51 municipal councils and 248 municipalities.
The BJP leads in six municipal corporations including Jaipur, Ajmer, Alwar, Udaipur, Kota and Bhilwara, whilst Congress is ahead in Jodhpur, Pali and Bikaner.
In Udaipur Municipal Corporation, the BJP secured a decisive majority with 53 of 80 wards, compared to Congress's 23 seats. The saffron party has also performed strongly in Jaipur, the state's largest municipal corporation with 150 wards.
Jodhpur Municipal Corporation has produced a dramatic outcome, with both BJP and Congress winning exactly 44 wards each in the 100-member body.
The 11 independent winners in Jodhpur could prove crucial in determining the municipal leadership. In Ajmer, Congress won 37 seats against the BJP's 32, with 11 independents holding the balance of power after the BJP lost control of the corporation for the first time in 36 years.
Independent candidates have emerged as significant players across multiple civic bodies. In Bharatpur, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's home district, independents are leading in 17 of 65 wards, ahead of BJP's five and Congress's three.
The counting process, which began at 8:00 AM today, determined the fate of candidates contesting 10,245 councillor posts across the state. The civic polls are being closely watched ahead of the 2028 Rajasthan Assembly elections.
