Rajasthan scaling up urban mobility with 1,150 e-buses under PM e-Bus Scheme: Ravi Jain, Secy, Local Self Government department
He said 139 buses from the first phase are already operational across eight cities
Rajasthan is expanding its urban public transport network with 1,150 electric buses approved under the Centre’s PM e-Bus scheme. Ravi Jain, IAS, Secretary, Local Self Government Department, said 139 buses from the first phase are already in operation across eight cities.
The scheme aims to support urban transport and expand electric mobility. Rajasthan has been allocated 675 e-buses in the first phase for Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Bikaner, Bhilwara, Alwar and Ajmer. A further 475 buses have been approved under the second phase for Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Alwar and Sikar.
The first phase allocation includes 565 nine-metre buses and 110 standard 12-metre buses. Jaipur has the largest allocation at 150 buses, while Jodhpur and Kota have been allocated 100 each, Ajmer 100, Bikaner 75, and Udaipur, Bhilwara and Alwar 50 each.
“E-bus operations have started in a phased manner across the cities, with the remaining buses to be brought into service progressively,” Jain said.
As of the latest update, 139 buses from the first phase are in service. Jaipur has 45 e-buses operating, followed by Bhilwara with 28, Udaipur with 25 and Kota with 21. Jodhpur, Bikaner, Alwar and Ajmer have five buses each in service.
Including 60 additional buses received so far, 199 e-buses are available across the eight cities. The department has installed 65 chargers for the fleet.
In Jaipur, the 150 buses approved in the first phase are planned to operate from Bagrana and Todi depots, with 75 buses allocated to each. Fifteen chargers have been installed at Bagrana, where 45 e-buses are currently operating. Installation of another 15 chargers at Todi is underway.
The second phase will add another 475 buses to Rajasthan’s electric public transport fleet. Jaipur alone has been allocated 300 buses, while Jodhpur, Alwar, Bikaner and Sikar will receive 25, 50, 50 and 50 buses, respectively.
For Jaipur, an agreement for 168 of the 300 second-phase buses was issued by JCTSL to CSL Mobility in January 2026. The remaining 307 buses are linked to the tender issued by CESL in April 2026.
The expansion will also require additional charging and depot infrastructure. For Jaipur, additional electrical infrastructure has been proposed at the Todi and Bagrana depots. Three new depots at Achrol, Khatwada and Ralawata-Goner have also been proposed for the remaining buses.
The scheme provides central assistance for depot infrastructure equivalent to 60 per cent of the total cost, with the state government bearing the remaining 40 per cent. The entire cost of behind-the-meter power infrastructure is covered through central assistance.
For bus operations, central assistance is provided at ₹24 per km for standard 12-metre buses and ₹22 per km for nine-metre midi buses.
